Yard signs are made of lightweight corrugated plastic. The trade name is Coroplast®, also known as Cor-Plastic or Corplast. It’s a popular medium for signage because it’s a printable surface that’s economical, weather-resistant, durable, and are printable on both sides. Corrugated plastic is basically a “fluted” or ribbed structure (think of squared-off plastic drinking straws) sandwiched between two sheets of plastic (polypropylene). It’s a remarkably versatile material and works great for yard signs.

Cor-Plastic is the most popular medium in the screen printing business. It’s “tougher than corrugated fiberboard, lighter than extruded plastic sheet, and is waterproof and stain-resistant,” according to the manufacturer. The plastic sheets are treated with special chemicals on both sides formulated to allow printing and adhesives to bond with them. In addition to signs, screen printers use it for boxes, bins, packaging, totes, and specialty lightweight construction projects.

You can print a picture or graphic directly onto Cor-Plastic or print on acrylic and then apply it to the plastic. Unfinished plastic sheeting is dazzling white so that color printing provides especially vivid results.

Lawn and Yard Signs Last

Yard signs made of Cor-Plastic will last quite a long time, depending on exposure to the elements. A Florida lawn sign could last a year before starting to fade, longer if laminated or treated with a matte surface. A plastic yard sign kept indoors will last forever.

And it keeps on going. Under Recycling Resin Code 5, polypropylene corrugated plastic is 100 percent recyclable. Depending on your local guidelines, you can recycle polypropylene in many ways. If the recycling guys won’t pick it up, the local recycling center will take it. You have to make sure to remove any non-plastic attachments like grommets and metal stakes.

They are also commonly used to advertise real estate deals, garage sales, and family or small business announcements. The reason 24 x 18 yard signs are so widely used is because they are big enough to get most basic messages across and easy to carry and set up. They can be set in the ground with a wooden stake, wire stakes, or a metal frame. Other common sizes for yard signs are 2′ x 2′, 4′ x 4′, 18” x 36”, 18” x 12” and 24” x 6”. But you can customize and get pretty much any size or shape you need.
